The Kingdom of Bhutan, as it is officially known is situated on the ancient Silk Road between Tibet, the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Bhutan has sustained its independence for centuries and never in its history has it been colonised, and so its ancient culture, deeply rooted in its Buddhist beliefs has not been untainted by external influences.
Blessed with outstanding natural scenery, ever-flowing rivers and the mighty Himalayan mountain range, the country’s landscape ranges from lush subtropical plains in the south to the sub-alpine Himalayan mountains in the north, where there are peaks higher than 7,000 metres (23,000 ft). Gangkhar Puensum is Bhutan’s highest peak. But what is so unique about Bhutan is a sense of blissful serenity and harmony that takes hold as soon as you set foot in this kingdom.
